Looking for an active tour in south Iceland? Get an adrenaline rush while riding an ATV on vast black sand beaches! This thrilling 2-hour guided tour includes breathtaking views of the surrounding area and a visit to the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck.
This action-packed adventure begins after meeting your ATV guide at the Arcanum Base near the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. You will receive all the necessary gear and a short safety briefing before venturing out to ride on Iceland’s sweeping black sand beaches.
An expert guide will lead the group to the coastline to witness breathtaking views of the surrounding area. You can get a glimpse of Dyrhólaey, a peninsula that is the southernmost tip of the country, and the mighty Mýrdalsjökull Glacier in the distance. Your guide can provide information on the area and highlight points of interest and make sure to keep you safe.
After leaving the black sand beach, the tour will head to the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreck. The DC-3 plane was used for cargo transport by the United States Navy, and it crashed in November 1973 on the way from the town of Höfn to Keflavík International Airport. The weather changed during the flight, the temperature dropped, and both engines eventually gave out due to icing. Luckily, none of the five crew members was injured in the crash. The wreckage remains on the beach, and this little-known site became famous after being featured in Justin Bieber’s “I’ll Show You” video, released in 2015.
Following the plane, you will drive to the Jökulsá River and up the foot of the mountain before returning to base camp.

Some meeting points don't have traditional addresses as they are parking lots or or mountain base camps in remote areas or, but you can always find these locations on Google Maps and see directions on the map above.
Before we head to the glacier for the tour, we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment (protective overalls, helmets and goggles for snowmobile tours, crampons and harnesses for glacier hikes, dry suit for kayak touts, etc.). Some equipment needs to be adjusted to each person's, so people must arrive 30 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.
We always recommend booking as soon as you are ready, especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. Changing or cancelling your tour is easy and free of charge until 24 hours before departure by emailing us (info@mountainguides.is). Tours can also be purchased on the day of as long as spaces are available.
Yes, you're allowed to bring a camera or GoPro to capture the stunning landscapes. However, keep in mind that you're responsible for securely attaching your equipment.
While we provide insulated coveralls, helmets, balaclavas, and boots (optional), we do recommend wearing warm, layered clothing underneath, especially if you are sensitive to cold.
